Conditions & Expectations

Please read thoroughly before beginning your application

  1. Instructors must be at least age 21.

  2. College enrollment or a degree is a plus, but not required if professional and career experience provides a strong foundation for lesson planning, presentation, and relationship building with students.

  3. Instructors must be fluent in English, but English need not be your first language.

  4. Instructors must work well with adolescents and teenagers, present lessons in an interesting and interactive manner, be flexible, adaptive, and possess an interest in learning about different cultures through direct, personal experiences.

  5. Program assistants must be at least 15 years of age. For applicants under 18, a parent or guardian or another sponsoring teacher delegated by the parent or guardian must be volunteering at the same program.

  6. Knowledge of the host country's language is not required.

  7. Applications are reviewed once all required documentation has been submitted. Applicants are notified of a decision within two weeks of complete application submission.

  8. After an applicant has been approved, participation status is confirmed upon receipt of the participation fee. The participation fee is refundable at the discretion of the WIESCO president.

  9. Instructors and program assistants are unpaid volunteers who do not receive compensation for their services from either WIESCO or the host institution.

  10. Volunteers are responsible for airfare to and from the host country. Many WIESCO volunteers choose to travel from the United States together; however this is not a requirement. The program director provides volunteers with the details regarding coordination of arrival and departure with in-country transport provided by program hosts. If traveling independently prior to the program, it is the volunteer's responsibility to arrive at the prearranged pick-up location or to arrange their own transportation to the program site.

  11. Passports, and visa if required, are the responsibility of the volunteer. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of return to the United States.

  12. Health insurance is the responsibility of the volunteer. WIESCO recommends verifying coverage for international travel prior to departure. Volunteers should also consider the purchase of travel insurance.

  13. Volunteers may be responsible for a portion or all of the cost of weekend and post-program excursion meals and lodging. Participation is optional.

  14. Volunteers are traveling internationally as representatives of WIESCO and the United States. Volunteers shall conduct themselves at all times in a manner that is respectful and professional. Volunteers are expected to abide by laws, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and refrain from any conduct that may bring into disrepute WIESCO or the United States.
