Daugavpils: This will be the thirteenth year for Daugavpils to host an English language camp. The city is located in the Latgale Province, an area somewhat different from the rest of Latvia. Caught in the cross-currents of a century of political conflict and war, the region remains one of the poorest in Eastern Europe.
The population of Daugavpils is about 120,000, second only in size to Riga, the capital. The city has always had a multi-national character because of its location at the crossroads between East and West, but the massive industrial growth forced by the Soviets has resulted in a population growth of a foreign work force so large that only 10% of the population is made up of ethnic Latvians. The remaining 90% of the population is composed of ethnic Russians, Poles, or Belarussians. Daugavpils is a regular host for dance festivals in the summer.
The language school is housed at the Russian Lyceum. Since 1986, the school has been searching for the most effective ways to give students advanced knowledge in languages, mathematics and other specialized subjects. the method of creative, problem-solving teaching has become the key goal for the school. the school tries to be responsive to changes in social, economic and political conditions and to the learn from the experience of other counties. The students who attend the Russian Lyceum begin learning English in the first grade. Our summer language program is for high school and older junior high students.
Teachers for the language school are housed in a Sports Hotel a short, pleasant walk from the school.
Kathy Murphy, Camp Director: Kathy is currently enjoying her 35th year as a high school Language Arts teacher in Somerset, WI. In 2001 she was a teacher at the WIESCO camp in Daugavpils, Latvia. and since 2002 she has been the director of that camp.Kathy Murphy
